Successive discounts don’t add up
“10% + 5%” means 10% off, then 5% off what is left: ₹1,000 becomes ₹900, then ₹855. The total discount is 14.5%, not 15%. Distributors often quote trade schemes this way, so it is worth checking the effective rate.
Discounts and GST
A discount shown on the invoice at the time of sale reduces the taxable value, so GST is charged on the price after discount (section 15(3) of the CGST Act). A discount given later, for example a year-end scheme, is adjusted through a credit note if it was agreed beforehand and linked to the invoices. Read our credit and debit notes guide.
Selling below MRP
You may sell below the MRP but never above it. When you sell at a discount on MRP, the billinginfo app can show “Discount (%) on MRP” on the invoice so the customer sees the saving.
How do I find the discount from MRP and price?
Discount % = (MRP − price) ÷ MRP × 100. ₹1,499 sold at ₹1,199 is a 20.01% discount.
Is GST charged before or after the discount?
After, when the discount is on the invoice. GST is charged on the discounted taxable value.
What is a flat discount versus a percentage?
A flat discount takes off a fixed amount (₹100 off); a percentage scales with the price. On a ₹400 item, ₹100 off is a 25% discount.
