Where the codes come from

The codes and descriptions are the GST portal’s HSN and SAC master list (21,935 HSN and 681 SAC entries). The suggested rates are matched from the GST rate schedules in force since 22 September 2025 (Notification 9/2025-Central Tax (Rate) for goods). Where a rate depends on a condition (a price per piece, a brand, a use) or the schedule is ambiguous, no rate is shown and you should check the notification. The same list powers the HSN search in the billinginfo app, and it updates there without an app update.

How many digits do I need?

Since 1 April 2021, a business with turnover up to ₹5 crore in the previous year must show at least 4 digits of HSN on B2B tax invoices, and a business above ₹5 crore at least 6 digits on all tax invoices (Notification 78/2020-Central Tax). Services use SAC codes, which start with 99. Read the HSN and SAC guide.

Tips for searching

  • Type the first digits of a code to see the chapter, heading and all sub-headings under it.
  • Type two words to narrow a description: “steel tube”, “hair oil”.
  • Descriptions use customs tariff language (“dentifrices” for toothpaste, “medicaments” for medicines). Common shop words such as toothpaste, mobile, chappal, atta and fridge are matched to the tariff words for you.

Something else on your mind? Write to us or see the help page.

Is the suggested rate final?

No. It is a starting point matched from the rate schedules. Rates can depend on conditions and exemptions; check the notification or your CA before you bill a new item.

Why do some codes have no rate?

Chapter and heading rows (2 and 4 digits) cover items at different rates, and some entries depend on conditions. Pick the most specific code for your item.

Does the list cover services?

Yes: SAC codes start with 99, for example 9954 for construction services or 9963 for accommodation and food services.
